Much like the exclamation mark (!), appending a ? to the beginning of a player input will change it into a query to the AI for information. (Ex. "?What is the girl's name?") In response, the AI will either generate an answer to the question and will not progress the story beyond this. It will then use the answer to this question as content within the story, and if the same or a similar question is asked later, it will instead of generating a new answer respond with the premade and remembered response. By including multiple questions in the input, the AI will answer each of them without including further information information beyond this.

TwistedHarmonyNow that you mention it, this would be a very useful command to have.

JaceEthanielThere is a reason that you are not supposed to ask the AI questions directly. None of the characters actually exist. The AI is not tracking them. That girl you read about in the last prompt doesn't exist until you input more information. She doesn't have a name, or an age; nothing. You are better off just wording your input in a way that would get the AI to describe it, for example: "[you] ask what the girl's name is." Where [you] is what the script adds to your input automatically.

SteamzombieYou can ask the AI questions directly, in my experience it works fairly well. Probably because there was some internal monologue in the training data. For best results, use the ! function.
-
25 Jan, '20
Byue MergedI would like this though I'm not sure how it would be implemented. I often try to use "examine" or "inspect" or "look at" like in a text adventure only to find they produce different results.
-

ByueThe above comment is really interesting, ![Question]? is surprisingly working quite well
-
27 Jan, '20
MetakThis may be necessary because it provides a direct way to generate clean information and avoid sudden advances in the plot, sometimes AI steals the protagonist's name.
-
27 Jan, '20
ShichiNoBushiAs I mentioned in the description, the intention is to ask for some information from the AI an not have it progress more of the story beyond answering it.
-
28 Jan, '20
DevonOne way this could be done using the steam zombie workaround is to translate ?question to !question? and not give it to the AI after the next prompt generated.

TomI think this is a must, because right now if you ask that "in the game" the AI will answer and continue the story when you don't want to, and possibly altering/shifting the context to some degree (it seems like it)
It this gets added please make it possible to edit the AI response (Just like the alter command) to directly edit it's memory and avoid the AI to "clone" characters and avoid the ai confusing who is who -

clear as Dae MergedYou used to be able to do that with !describe SUBJECT; trait 1, trait 2
Now, you just need to insert that into Story mode without the ! Instead, just put a period after the second trait, or the ai might try to add a third.
So it should look like
describe Doctor Denmar; eyes, clothes. -

LunixMakes sense, since the Ai does not keep track of Characters itsself but more like in terms of History of the Story. and if your prompt describes a bluehaired short girl, you could ask the Ai what haircolor the girl has, if it doesn't know the answer it might be a great way to test and improve your way of Writing and double check stuff.
Pretty good, makes sense to me! -

throwawayexperimentation Merged'/describe' sounds like an interesting feature. Maybe it could even be used in the 'Contribute' menu, where players could 'ask' the AI about something, and depending on the AI's response, the players can modify it and that data goes back into the AI to train it to understand situations/objects/characters/subjects better.

YessumsI like the idea of a AI generated response to internal question. It'll be nice to not have a non-descript group of beings surround me with no clue as to approach them. I.E You attack - "Woopsie daisy it was a harmless group of villagers!", OR You converse - "Woopsie daisy it's a pack of feral goblins!"
-
19 Jun, '20
YessumsSide Note: It would definitely add a DnD style "roll perception" kinda feel.

throwawayexperimentationI realize that this 'contributor' experiment can already be done using the feedback menu.

Yessums MergedHopefully, Niko my good lad, this will be possible with the planned context command! I look forward to a day where the AI can specify something without needlessy telling a backstory.
-
22 Jun, '20
111So do you mean it should Add something that forces the A.I to tell the player everything about what a preson looks like?
-
22 Jun, '20
YessumsIt would probably be an output separate from the adventure, using two specified subjects. I.E : "/context John's clothes", The AI will generate it's own description involving clothing, which could somehow be injected into the larger context of story AI.

StealmwoodI experimented a bit with scripting for this, and there seems to be a way of automatically modifying "describe [object]" into a "Description of the [object]:", which ends up generating quite good results. However scripting sadly doesn't seem to allow edit or removal of the header "Description of the [object]:" from the reply afterwards, so it remains in the story log and thus causes the AI to start producing unwanted results.
-
15 Jul, '20
StealmwoodWith minor experimentation, it seems that simply inserting the question into story mode with the ">" prefix seems to work very well. I'll play a few stories with this to see if it holds up.
Actual example:
[...] suddenly, the weird noise returns. Louder this time.
> Where is it coming from?
You look around, but you still can't see anything that could be making the noise. You decide to go over to your fishing-poles, to see if there is anything odd about them. -

andy8992 MergedTo be clear.
This would just need to be inserted into the story in the same way Story does.
It has nothing to do with actions using

StealmwoodYes, I'll also clarify that the "Description of the XYZ:" I tried out as a direct story insert. But I've also experimented a bit is inserting "> What does XYZ look like?" since it has a more natrual interface that doesn't require tinkering with prompts and supports any sort of question eg. "> Where do I know her from?", but sadly I've had mixed results so far. Sometimes it works really well, sometimes the AI doesn't catch on at all.

AimjockI support this feature! I think it’d be a fantastic and quite necessary addition to the game.
Where am I? What is that character wearing? What’s the nature of the relationship between two characters? Etc., etc.
A way for the A.I. to describe anything, and remember exactly what it says for future instances so it doesn’t change unless you change it, WITHOUT progressing the story in any way, and being able to alter it yourself, would be incredible!
It’d be almost like world info in command form. -
26 Jul, '20
Aramis Xavier de LimaWe need this more than any other update
-
29 Jul, '20
AimjockI agree on this completely, Aramis! I had the same thought myself. I’d be ecstatic if this were added. It’d make the game a lot more playable since a lot of the time, your character can see, hear, experience, etc. people, environments, objects, and so on, that you don’t know about. A describe command would be utterly fantastic!

OmnomI have yet to find a truly reliable way to get the AI to describe something. A way to consistently get lengthy descriptions about things or answers to questions would be fantastic.
The result would NEED to be inserted into the story, however, as otherwise the AI would ignore it completely and generate contradictory information. -
30 Aug, '20
Connielike a lot of suggestions on this board, the root of this suggestion is not understanding how a GPT transformer works.
the AI already has the ability to give you specific details about an object. you just need to use the text prediction transformer like a text prediction transformer.
typing things like "these are all the facts about the sword you are holding:"
(with the colon) usually forces the AI into listing facts about your sword. including known things that were mentioned earlier -

seth_sternamI support that kind of function, it will be a welcome addition to the game. It will be a good way to test if the initial prompt / remember / world info is correctly interpreted by the AI or if you need to make things more clear or spelled differently. For someone like me that describe characters or places, I think it's useful.
Some have suggested to just ask the AI with the "do" command, but I don't think it's the same. A "describe" command should be more factual, like a list almost. -

Dynamictry this command You: putt on your blue bikini: Description Details
and don't Forget use : -
08 Sep, '20
OmnomI suspect using constructions like Connie and Dynamic suggested messes with the AI's expectations of text structure. However, you could get around that by using that format to make the AI generate the details and then altering the result to make it a regular paragraph of text. A little unwieldy, but effective.

Onyebuchi Ekenta@Omnom
Yes, that's what I've been doing lately. Another idea I had that might help with this is to use a ">" before your prompt. This is how AI Dungeon formats actions so they probably do something to make sure lines don't start with ">" when formatting the next output. -
